The Categories

When I began this site, I wrote posts to explain both my purpose here and the type of categories I had for television shows in order to try and organize them enough to pick what shows to watch.  I felt unsatisfied leaving them down at the bottom of my posts from a year ago so I redesigned my site to allow for easier access to read about them.

Introduction

I wrote an introduction post when I first started which has the general basic idea of what I plan to do.  My categories have changed significantly so some of that post is a bit wrong, but if you need to read the basics, I encourage you to do so.

"Lately, I have become slightly motivated to write about sports, but then my need to write went away soon after I began writing an article on something sports-related and I found myself disinterested in finishing.  I can't seem to put enough focus into finishing a detailed, numbers-driven article.  Usually a sports post will take me hours, so I'm assuming that has a lot to do with it." - Snippet taken directly from my introduction post.

Shows That Changed Television
Since these shows are directly stolen from Alan Sepinwall's book of the same title (which I haven't read, but will read as soon as these shows are watched), this is the lone category that is completely unaffected.

Shows I've finished
Breaking Bad
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Friday Night Lights
Lost
The Wire
The Sopranos

Shows I'm still watching
24 (I've completed three seasons)
Mad Men (I've completed four seasons)
The Shield (I'm on the last season)

Shows I haven't started
Battlestar Galactica
Deadwood
Oz

I am on the last season of The Shield and will finish it very soon - probably by the time you read this.  I'm re-watching the first four seasons of Mad Men and then watching the next three season comes out if possible.  Lastly, I'm in the middle of Season 4 of 24.  I plan to skip Season 6 of 24, watch Season 7 and I haven't decided if I'm watching Season 8.  I'm almost definitely skipping the sixth season though.  I will probably start Deadwood in Summer 2015.

Classic Comedy
This category is pretty simple.  These are comedies that haven't aired a new episode in five years.  The exception to this is Arrested Development which is a different case entirely.  I just chose not to remove it from this list since I don't foresee any new episodes happening anytime soon.

Shows I've finished
Arrested Development
Freaks and Geeks
Friends
That 70's Show

Shows I'm watching
The Andy Griffith Show
Cheers (I've seen eight episodes)
The Simpsons

Shows I haven't started
The Dick Van Dyke Show
Frasier
Larry Sanders Show
Seinfeld
Undeclared

This category hasn't been watched much since I've committed to watching the first eight seasons of The Simpsons.  Once I finish The Simpsons, I'm not totally sure what I'll do next.  I plan to finish Freaks and Geeks soon.  I just haven't gotten the inspiration to finish Arrested Development.  I know watching all 14 episodes helps, but I just keep finding myself with something I'd rather watch.  Also, I've seen quite a few Seinfeld episodes, but I plan to watch them in order at some point.

Comedy
Unlike the previous category, this is for comedies that are mostly still airing or at least had their final episode a short time ago.  This list does not include FX comedies, because FX has so many shows I want to watch, it got its own category created for itself.

Shows I've finished
30 Rock
Blue Mountain State

Shows I'm watching
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Community
How I Met Your Mother
New Girl
Parks and Recreation
Scrubs

Shows I haven't started
Bob's Burgers
The Office
Trailer Park Boys
Workaholics

Welcome to the neglected category.  With the creation of this blog, I became less concerned with watching comedies.  Most of the ones listed as watching haven't been watched since I started this blog.  The exceptions are New Girl, which I got into recently, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which I gave a shot and haven't stopped watching.  Part of the problem is that the two newer shows I am caught up to and mostly watch live whereas the rest I'm really behind.  So if I want to watch a comedy I lean towards the one where I only watch an episode or three instead of accidentally watching seasons worth.  Also, besides Scrubs and HIMYM, I have like a season or a little more than a season to go to catch up so I'm not that far behind.

Classic Dramas

At the time that I am writing this, I haven't seen any of the shows on this list except one, which is 10 episodes worth.  If you want to know more about these dramas and why I chose them, free free to click the link above.  If you simply want to know which shows, I'll list them here for you.

Shows I'm Watching
The West Wing (Through 1 season)
Twilight Zone
The X-Files (through 2 seasons)

Shows I haven't started
Alfred Hitchcock Presents:
Hill Street Blues
Homicide: Life on the Street
St. Elsewhere
Six Feet Under
Twin Peaks

The X-Files will be watched first, but I won't necessarily finish it before I start another series on this list.  I have an unofficial rule that I won't watch two pre-1970s series at once (hell, pre-1990 really) and The X-Files was obviously made after 1990 (as was Twin Peaks).  So there's a distinct possibility I will start another show while I watch The X-Files.  The pre-1990s shows won't be watched until I finish Star Trek and will be watched one after the other.

British TV Shows
Downton Abbey
Doctor Who (Classic and New)
Upstairs, Downstairs
Luther
The Office
Merlin
Skins

I quit Downton Abbey after the shaky second season - it went from an enjoyable period piece to a soap opera.  Soap operas are fine, but not for me.  I've started classic Doctor Who a bit.  I've seen seven "serials" - which is basically three episodes, but in reality is I think a combined 13 episodes.  Anyway, Netflix has posted some episodes - they are apparently random and not necessarily the best and Amazon Prime has most of the later episodes.  When I'm done catching up to comedies that I've fallen behind on, I will probably start The Office (UK) - which I have made it my duty to watch before I start the US Office.

FX Shows
Comedies
Archer
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
The League
Louie
Wilfred

Dramas
American Horror Story
The Americans
Damages
Fargo
Justified
Nip Tuck
Sons of Anarchy

I followed and watched the most previous seasons of The Americans and Justified.  I tried to watch Louie on Mondays, but Mondays are kind of my most busy day so it just hasn't worked out.  And I'm caught up to the most previous season posted on Netflix for American Horror Story, The League, Wilfred, and Sons of Anarchy.  The rest I have yet to start.

I'm slow to update this, but I will post the rest of my categories soon.  The only relevant categories of the past are ones that are updated otherwise they are essentially useless.  In addition to updating old posts, I will post four new categories.
